his father, and so there was really nothing in there (so far as he knew) to be angry about.  He'd invented the detail about the spelling of his family
name just to amuse himself.  He had no way of knowing, in fact, that he had even
picked up the right book.

happen next?  Why did he keep asking himself these stupid questions?
